Where Heaven Touches the Trail

A couple of years ago, before my injury, when I could still traverse uneven terrain, my husband and I hiked through Mono Cliffs Provincial Park, stopping along the way to take in the unfathomable beauty and majesty of God’s creation.

Along the way, as we walked through a rugged piece of the trail, I noticed something so simple, yet immensely spectacular. It wasn’t the heights we climbed, or the array of trees beyond those heights.

Instead, along both sides of this rocky path were wildflowers displaying a stunning array of purples, yellows, oranges and whites! I took notice of how these vibrant colours blended and coordinated so perfectly with each other and with the wild, green grass surrounding them, creating a bouquet of magnificence, splendor and wonderfully perfumed aromas.

Then a thought came to me. Mankind has created a colour wheel which we use to blend and coordinate fashionable outfits that look beautiful against the various complexions of people around the world; to paint beautiful masterpieces that are hung in renowned galleries; to create table settings and colour-coordinated rooms and furnishings that provide an oasis of relaxation in our homes; and so much more.

We pat ourselves on the back for the wonders we’ve created, believing ourselves to be true originals, not giving one thought, or even realizing that we’re merely copying what God has already pioneered.

God is the one, in the first place, who came up with these brilliant colours, and coordinated them in their natural surroundings, when he said in Genesis 1, verses 11 and 12: “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

The beauty and majesty of God’s handiwork is there for us to enjoy.

Whenever my husband and I spend time in God’s nature we know we’re relishing a small taste of heaven. As we rest in his green pastures and sit beside his quiet waters, God always restores and refreshes our souls.
